Advanced Search Tips

  • To search by phrase (two or more words) wrap your criteria in quotes. ex: "Find me"
  • By default, searches use OR to connect words (e.g. a search for Will James will return records that include the words Will OR James). If you want to find records with both keywords, type AND between words.
  • Name (artist/creator) is listed “Last, First”
  • Use multiple categories to narrow selections. For instance, to see only paintings, enter painting in the Art or Archive Type field. To see only oil paintings, add oil in the Medium field. To see only oil paintings by a certain artist, add to the Name field.
  • Use wildcards (*) to search for partial words in Advanced Search. For instance dog in subject terms yields only three records. Entering dog* returns nine. (Using Keyword search returns more records by searching additional fields, including description.)
  • The catalog buttons can narrow your search to a selected catalog. If you only want to search for works of art, unclick Archives and Creators on the top of the left sidebar.
  • After searching, click on any record to view catalog information. Click again on the thumbnail image to view image full size.
